Lamivir S is an antiretroviral medication that combines lamivudine and stavudine for the management of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). This combination is designed to decrease the HIV viral load and improve immune system function, helping to prevent complications associated with HIV and delay the progression to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome).
Composition:
Each tablet of Lamivir S contains:
- Lamivudine
- Stavudine
Mechanism of Action:
Both lamivudine and stavudine are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). They inhibit the function of reverse transcriptase, an enzyme necessary for viral replication.
- Lamivudine: Gets incorporated into the viral DNA by reverse transcriptase, causing premature chain termination and thus inhibiting viral replication.
- Stavudine: Also gets incorporated into the viral DNA, leading to chain termination and inhibition of HIV replication.
Uses:
Lamivir S is used to:
- Treat HIV infection: It helps reduce the viral load in the body, allowing the immune system to function more effectively and reducing the risk of HIV-related illnesses.
- Prevent the progression to AIDS: By managing the level of HIV in the body, it helps prevent the disease from progressing to AIDS.
Dosage:
The dosage should be prescribed by a healthcare provider based on individual factors including body weight, kidney function, liver function, and concurrent medications
