Biodronate (Pamidronate) 90mg Intravenous is a prescription medication used to treat osteoporosis, a condition characterized by brittle and porous bones that can lead to fractures.
Composition:
Each vial of Biodronate contains 90mg of pamidronate, a bisphosphonate that inhibits the activity of osteoclasts, the cells responsible for breaking down bone tissue.
Mechanism of Action:
Pamidronate works by:
- Inhibiting the activity of osteoclasts, which reduces bone resorption and increases bone density
- Suppressing the formation of new bone by inhibiting the activity of osteoblasts, the cells responsible for forming new bone tissue
- Reducing the levels of calcium in the blood by inhibiting the absorption of calcium in the gut
Indications:
Biodronate is indicated for the treatment of:
- Osteoporosis in postmenopausal women who are at high risk of fracture
- Osteoporosis in men who are at high risk of fracture
- Hypercalcemia (elevated levels of calcium in the blood) due to malignancy or other conditions
Administration:
Biodronate is administered intravenously over a period of approximately 2 hours. The recommended dose is 90mg every 2 weeks.
Side Effects:
Common side effects of Biodronate include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea
- Headache
- Dizziness
Rare but serious side effects include:
- Osteonecrosis (death of bone tissue) of the jaw or femur
- Atypical subtrochanteric or diaphyseal femoral fractures (breaks in the thigh bone)
- Hypocalcemia (low levels of calcium in the blood)
Contraindications:
Biodronate is contraindicated in patients with:
- Hypocalcemia (low levels of calcium in the blood)
- Hypercalcemia (elevated levels of calcium in the blood)
- History of severe allergic reactions to pamidronate or other components of the product
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
Precautions:
Patients with a history of dental problems or other oral health issues should be monitored closely while using Biodronate. Patients with a history of kidney disease or severe kidney impairment should be monitored closely for changes in their kidney function.
Interactions:
Biodronate may interact with other medications, including:
- Bisphosphonates
- Corticosteroids
- Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)

Important Note:
Biodronate should be administered by a healthcare professional in a clinical setting. Patients should be monitored regularly for changes in their bone density, as well as for signs of allergic reactions or other adverse events.
