Zotide (Teriparatide) 750mcg Injection is a medication used to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women who have a high risk of fractures. It is also used to treat osteoporosis in men who have been treated with glucocorticoids and have a high risk of fractures.
Composition: Each injection of Zotide contains 750mcg of Teriparatide (an active pharmaceutical ingredient), which is a synthetic version of the human parathyroid hormone (PTH).
Mechanism of Action: Teriparatide works by mimicking the action of PTH, which helps to regulate bone metabolism and calcium levels. By increasing bone formation and decreasing bone resorption, Teriparatide helps to strengthen bones and reduce the risk of fractures.
Dosage: The recommended dose of Zotide is 20mcg injected subcutaneously once a day. The injection should be administered in the thigh or abdomen, and the needle should be inserted at a 90-degree angle to the skin.
Side Effects: Common side effects of Zotide include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Muscle weakness
- Joint pain or swelling
- Injection site reactions
Rare but serious side effects include:
- Increased risk of osteosarcoma (bone cancer)
- Increased risk of atypical subtrochanteric and diaphyseal femoral fractures
- Increased risk of hypercalcemia (high levels of calcium in the blood)
- Increased risk of hypophosphatemia (low levels of phosphate in the blood)
Recommendation: Zotide is recommended for patients with osteoporosis who have a high risk of fractures. Patients with a history of osteosarcoma or other bone cancer should not receive Zotide.
Important Note:
- Zotide should be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider with experience in the treatment of osteoporosis.
- Patients with a history of kidney disease, liver disease, or other medical conditions that may affect bone metabolism should be closely monitored while taking Zotide.
- Zotide may interact with other medications, such as calcium supplements, vitamin D supplements, and certain medications for osteoporosis. Patients should inform their healthcare provider of all medications they are taking before starting Zotide therapy.
- Patients should be advised to report any symptoms of hypersensitivity reactions, such as rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing.
