TAZILIN INJ is a sterile, powder for solution for intravenous (IV) administration. It combines Piperacillin Sodium (a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic) and Tazobactam Sodium (a beta-lactamase inhibitor) to enhance antibacterial activity against resistant organisms.

Composition

Active Ingredients per vial:
- Piperacillin Sodium (equivalent to Piperacillin) – 4 g
- Tazobactam Sodium (equivalent to Tazobactam) – 0.5 g
Excipients: Sodium citrate, sodium bicarbonate (for pH adjustment).

Mechanism of Action

Piperacillin:
- Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs).
- Broad-spectrum activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and anaerobic bacteria.
Tazobactam:
- Irreversibly inhibits beta-lactamase enzymes (produced by resistant bacteria), protecting Piperacillin from degradation.

Dosage & Administration

Standard Adult Dose:
- 4.5 g (4g Piperacillin + 0.5g Tazobactam) every 6–8 hours via IV infusion (over 30 minutes).
Severe Infections (e.g., nosocomial pneumonia): Up to 3.375 g every 4 hours or 4.5 g every 6 hours.
Renal Impairment: Adjust dose based on creatinine clearance (e.g., reduce frequency to 2.25 g every 6–8 hours if CrCl <40 mL/min).

Uses (Indications)

Severe intra-abdominal infections (e.g., peritonitis).
Nosocomial pneumonia (hospital-acquired).
Complicated urinary tract infections (UTIs).
Skin and soft tissue infections (including diabetic foot infections).
Septicemia (bloodstream infections).

Storage

Unreconstituted powder: Store below 25°C, protect from moisture.
Reconstituted solution: Use immediately (stable for 24 hours at 2–8°C if diluted in compatible IV fluids).
Do not freeze.

Recommendations

Administer via slow IV infusion (30 minutes) to avoid vein irritation.
Monitor renal function, liver enzymes, and blood counts during prolonged therapy.
Not recommended for MRSA infections (use with vancomycin/linezolid if MRSA is suspected).
