Idrofos (Ibandronic Acid Tablets) 150mg is a prescription medication used to treat osteoporosis, a condition characterized by brittle and porous bones that can lead to fractures.
Composition:
Each tablet of Idrofos contains 150mg of ibandronic acid, a bisphosphonate that inhibits the activity of osteoclasts, the cells responsible for breaking down bone tissue.
Mechanism of Action:
Ibandronic acid works by:
- Inhibiting the activity of osteoclasts, which reduces bone resorption and increases bone density
- Suppressing the formation of new bone by inhibiting the activity of osteoblasts, the cells responsible for forming new bone tissue
- Reducing the levels of calcium in the blood by inhibiting the absorption of calcium in the gut
Dosage:
The recommended dosage of Idrofos is one tablet taken once daily, with or without food.
Uses:
Idrofos is indicated for the treatment of:
- Osteoporosis in postmenopausal women who are at high risk of fracture
- Osteoporosis in men who are at high risk of fracture
- Hypercalcemia (elevated levels of calcium in the blood) due to malignancy or other conditions
Side Effects:
Common side effects of Idrofos include:
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain
- Constipation
- Diarrhea

- Dizziness
Rare but serious side effects include:
- Osteonecrosis (death of bone tissue) of the jaw or femur
- Atypical subtrochanteric or diaphyseal femoral fractures (breaks in the thigh bone)
- Hypocalcemia (low levels of calcium in the blood)
Contraindications:
Idrofos is contraindicated in patients with:
- Hypocalcemia (low levels of calcium in the blood)
- Hypercalcemia (elevated levels of calcium in the blood)
- History of severe allergic reactions to ibandronic acid or other components of the product
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
Precautions:
Patients with a history of dental problems or other oral health issues should be monitored closely while using Idrofos. Patients with a history of kidney disease or severe kidney impairment should be monitored closely for changes in their kidney function.
