Deriva 15 gm (Adapalene Gel)
Composition
- Active Ingredient: Adapalene
- Concentration: 0.1% or 0.3% (most common formulation is 0.1%)
- Excipients: May include water, carbomer, methylparaben, propylparaben, sodium hydroxide for pH adjustment, and other inactive ingredients depending on the formulation.
Mechanism of Action
Adapalene is a third-generation topical retinoid. It works by:
- Modulating cellular differentiation and proliferation.
- Reducing inflammation by decreasing the activity of inflammatory mediators.
- Normalizing the shedding of skin cells, thus preventing the clogging of pores.
- It binds to retinoic acid receptors (RARs) in the skin, promoting the turnover of skin cells and preventing the formation of acne lesions.
Dosage
- Application: Apply a thin layer of Adapalene gel to the affected areas of the skin once daily, preferably in the evening before bedtime.
- Instructions:
- Wash and dry the skin gently before applying the gel.
- Avoid using large amounts; a pea-sized amount is generally sufficient.
- Use cautiously around sensitive areas, such as the eyes, lips, and mucous membranes.
Usage
- Indications: Primarily used for the treatment of acne vulgaris in patients aged 12 years and older.
- Duration of Treatment: Treatment duration may vary but usually continues for several weeks to months; improvements may be seen in about 4-8 weeks of consistent use.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
- Skin irritation (redness, dryness, peeling)
- Burnings or stinging sensation
- Photosensitivity (increased sensitivity to sunlight)
- Exacerbation of acne (initially, as the skin adjusts)
Less common but more serious side effects can include:
- Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)
- Severe irritation requiring discontinuation of the product
Recommendations
- Avoid Sun Exposure: Use sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection and wear protective clothing when exposed to sunlight.
- Moisturize: Use a suitable moisturizer to help manage dryness and irritation.
- Consult a Dermatologist: Seek guidance if severe irritation occurs or if acne does not improve after 12 weeks of use.
- Avoid Concurrent Use: Limit the use of other topical acne medications, especially those that can cause irritation, to avoid exacerbating side effects.
Important Note
- Not Recommended for Women Who Are Pregnant: Retinoids are not generally recommended during pregnancy due to potential risks to the fetus.
- Patch Test: It may be advisable to perform a patch test on a small area of skin to check for any adverse reaction before full application.
- Store Properly: Keep the product in a cool, dry place and out of reach of children.
Always consult with a healthcare professional before beginning any new treatment to determine appropriateness based on individual health needs and conditions.
