Xapavir
Xapavir, manufactured by NATCO Pharma, is a medication used for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. It typically contains a combination of the following active ingredients:
- Dolutegravir: An integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI) that prevents the HIV virus from integrating its genetic material into the host’s DNA.
Side Effects:
As with any medication, Xapavir can cause side effects. Common and serious side effects include:
Common Side Effects:
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Sleep problems
Serious Side Effects:
- Liver problems (elevated liver enzymes, hepatitis, jaundice)
- Kidney issues (changes in kidney function)
- Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS)
- Allergic reactions (skin rash or severe reactions)
Mechanism of action
 Dolutegravir:
- Class: Integrase Strand Transfer Inhibitor (INSTI)
- Mechanism: Dolutegravir inhibits the integrase enzyme that HIV uses to integrate its viral DNA into the host’s DNA. By blocking this integration step, Dolutegravir prevents the virus from replicating and producing new viral particles within the host’s cells.
Combination Therapy:
The use of multiple agents that target different stages of the HIV life cycle is a cornerstone of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and is critical to reducing the risk of resistance and improving treatment efficacy.
